Of Counsel

I am a proud Texas and was raised in Wichita Texas in the north central plains. My father served in the U.S. Navy, and then as a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation for almost 30 years. My mother had a 35 year career in public education as both an English teacher and a guidance counselor. My grandfather lied about his age to join U.S. Army the day after the Pearl Harbor attack.

My family instilled in me a duty to serve others and my country. Family stories of adventure, and reading novels and biographies gave me a desire to see the wider world.

I accomplished this by receiving an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. During my time at the Academy, I spent a year sailing on commercial merchant vessels and even participated in the First Gulf War by delivering cargo to our troops in Saudi Arabia. After I graduated, I received my Third Mate’s license was and commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. I was able to travel the world for three more years and have visited almost every continent. I was eventually honorable discharged from the U.S. Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

My plan was always to become a lawyer after my sea-going days ended, and I was fortunate enough to be accepted into and attend The University of Texas School of Law in Austin, TX. I was an associate at a premier real estate firm for a few years and then founded my own firm which I maintained for 18 years before joining Walters Gilbreath, PLLC. I have extensive experience in family law as well as many other areas of civil law. I have found that my broad life and legal experience gives me an advantage to achieve my clients’ objectives.

I believe that developing relationships with my clients helps me to serve them better. At Walters Gilbreath, PLLC, we deal directly with our clients and are not insulated from them by the usual intervening levels of secretaries and paralegals at most firms. My clients have my cell phone number and call me directly.

In my personal life, I spend as much time with my wife and children as I can. My weekends are filled with baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball games, and church and homework. My lovely wife was raised by a family law attorney and a teacher as well and now has her Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership. Having children of my own made me a much better family law attorney and taught me greater empathy for my clients who are trying to do the best for their own children in the midst of horrible emotional turmoil and hardship.

I work hard to accomplish my client’s goals while also educating them on the complicated and often slow legal process. I cannot ever promise a client a certain result, but I can promise that I will work as hard as I can on your case as I can in conjunction with our experienced and compassionate team at Walters Gilbreath, PLLC.

How We Treat Our Clients

When it comes to our clients, we have a unique approach—an approach our lawyers have cultivated after representing thousands of clients over the years. When you trust your family law case to our competent team of Texas divorce attorneys, we offer:

  • Direct Contact With Our Attorneys

You deserve direct and frequent communication with your attorney, not staff. As attorney practices grow, the usual reaction is to hire more staff. We’ve been guilty of the same thing in the past, but we learned and improved. The problem with this approach is attorneys get isolated from clients and spend most of their time managing the staff (at the client’s expense). We’ve now structured our offices so that you will be dealing with an attorney on all matters, not an employee of the attorneys.

  • Fearless Use of the Court System

Many attorneys fail to use the court system to their clients’ advantage. In fact, many will shy away from trial and try to convince their clients to settle when a better outcome can likely be achieved in court. The reason for this is that a court hearing is stressful for the attorney, difficult to predict, and may expose the attorney’s limitations. We will not pressure you into a bad settlement; in fact, we’ve found that our clients get a better outcome when we present their case to a judge or jury.

  • The Truth, Even When It Hurts

Attorneys, like everyone, tend to tell people what they want to hear. This is especially true at the beginning of representation (to get you signed up). We don’t think this is helpful to clients, and in fact, it harms a client’s case. We are not shy about telling our clients what we think they need to do. As a client of our firm, you will get the truth—good or bad—from us at all times.

  • Strong Legal Guidance

The most difficult time you will ever have making the right decisions is in the middle of a family law dispute. Many clients either want to rush things and get them over with, or they want to avoid conflict with the other side. We don't shy away from telling the client what we think is the best course of action. Of course, what to do is ultimately up to our clients, but they never lack for strong, helpful guidance.
